Argentina-Chile I
30. January 2011 until 18. February 2011

After a 3 days ride from the border of Paraguay through farm- and grasslands, we finally arrived in Buenos Aires. The capital with its elegant architecture, wide boulevards, beautiful plazas and parks, has a distinct European flair. We found a charming old hotel in the middle of the centre, from where we explored the barrios of Recoleta, Palermo and La Boca. The chic quarter of San Telmo with its superb restaurants, bars and stylish shops, was our favorite hangout.
El Calafate in Patagonia and Ushuaia at the southern end of the world, were our next destinations. Would they be worth the 2’400 km long ride by motorbike? We decided against it, after a travel agent offered us a great package deal including flights, hotels and sightseeing. El Calafate on the Lago Argentino, exists almost entirely as a tourist town, from where we visited the Parque National los Glaciares. The major attraction is the spectacular Glacier “Perito Moreno”, which descends to the surface of the water, with a 5 km frontage and a height of over 60 meters. It was very impressing to hear the rumbling and to watch the big pieces of ice cracking off the glacier and falling in to the lake. A must for bird lovers is the Laguna Nimez near El Calafate, a natural reserve with flamingos, black-necked swans and many different species of ducks.
From El Calafate, we flew to the island of Tierra del Fuego at the extreme south of South America. Ushuaia, the most southerly town in Argentina was named after the ship in which Darwin had sailed here in 1832. At the “Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego” we saw what nature looks like, with no human interference. Public access is limited to just a small part of the park. The un-spoilt mountains, rivers, lakes and deep valleys, are absolutely breath taking. An excursion through the Beagle Channel, to remote islands inhabited only by cormorants and sea lions, rounded off our trip to the southern end of the world and left us in awe of the landscape.
The Peninsula Valdes, on the Atlantic Coast in Patagonia, was our next stop. It took us 3 days to reach Puerto Madryn, from where we extensively explored the peninsula with its amazing marine wildlife. The island is famous for whale watching and for its colonies of sea lions, penguins and elephant seals. After that, we headed west to the beautifully situated Bariloche, on the shore of the Lake “Nahuel Huapi”.
