Guatemala
13. December 2009 until 04. January 2010

Guatemala is a festival of colours – from the green northern jungle with its majestic temples and ruins of the lost Mayan civilizations, to the turquoise-green pools of water at Semuc Champey, from the red lava of volcano Pacaya to the black sand and the orange sunsets on the Pacific. Antigua was our favourite city, with plenty of colonial architecture, pastel coloured houses, cobbled streets, beautiful courtyards and art displays. Because of the amazing view of Lake Atitlan and the surrounding volcanoes, we stayed in Panajachel over X-mas. Chichicastenango with it’s busy, bustling market - where locals in their traditional dresses come searching for a bargain - bursts with colour. After visiting the small market town of San Francisco El Alto (2’600 m), we headed to the Pacific coast. We spent New Year at the black sand beaches of Monterrico.
