Mexico II
24. October until 08. Dezember 2009

The stone sculptures of warriors in Tula and the pyramids in Teotihuacan (place of the gods), built by ancient civilizations, were incredible. Staying in Taxco, a silver mining and trading town, with steep, twisting, cobbled streets and its white buildings was very enjoyable. We arrived in Puebla just in time for the colourful festivities in honour of the deceased “ festival de los muertos”. Stalls offering sweets in form of skulls and bones, children dressed as skeletons, ghosts and
devils were to be found everywhere.
Oaxaca is known for its fine buildings, churches, arcades and airy patios from the colonial period, a place with lots to see. The Lost World feeling of Chiapas is created by the indigenous inhabitants, their villages and colorful markets which makes everything seem timeless. San Cristobal de las Casas is stunningly located in a fertile valley and is one of Mexico’s most beautiful towns. In the brightly painted church of San Juan Chamula, the indigenous worshippers were sitting on the floor, chanting with rows of candles lit in front of them, each candle representing a member of their family. Palenque is one of the more impressive Maya ruins and is situated in the jungle. Isla Mujeres was a good place to relax for a few days, away from the busy package tourism destination Cancun.
