Paraguay
23. January 2011 until 30. January 2011

We did not know what to expect of Paraguay, when we entered the country in Pedro Juan Caballero from Brazil. It is a strange crossing, where the border between the two countries is the main street; the left side of the street being in Paraguay the right in Brazil.
Paraguay is landlocked between Brazil, Bolivia and Argentina and is a country of farmland and forest.
The capital Asuncion at the bay of the Rio Paraguay, was our first destination. Not the most beautiful city on earth, but the friendliness of the people made it worth visiting. Ciudad del Este in the east, has been described as the biggest shopping center in Latin America. It attracts visitors from Brazil and Argentina, who come here to buy cheap electronic goods, watches and perfumes. We went to Ciudad del Este because of its ideal location from where to visit the Iguazu Falls on the Argentina-Brazil border. Getting there was quite a challenge. We had to cross the 3 borders each twice, which resulted in a total of 6 stamps in our passports. The mighty Iguazu Falls (four times wider than the Niagara Falls), are absolutely magnificent! Our last stop, were the ruins of the Jesuit missions in Trinidad (UNESCO World Heritage Site), before crossing the border to Argentina from Encarnacion.
